In Detroit, MI, Ace was an innocent victim of Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) at its worst. He was killed simply because of his breed and for no other reason.
Ace had already suffered immensely in his life. He’d been the victim of horrible neglect, which caused his body to waste away. He was found in an Ace Hardware store in Detroit, emaciated and starving, but still sweet and gentle. Detroit Animal Control was called, and Ace was taken to the shelter.
The story from there should have been that Ace was brought back to health and adopted into a loving family. It should have been the final happy ending for a dog so cruelly treated by humans in his life. But the very people who took him from that nightmare brought with them one that was even worse – death by their very hands. Source.
Detroit has a BSL law which won’t allow for any Pit Bull to be adopted. Not a single one. It doesn’t matter how gentle, how sweet, how adoptable; if the breed is a Pit Bull, the sentence is death.
It didn’t matter the outcry from the advocates who begged for Ace’s life to be spared. Advocates pleaded with the officials at the DAC to let him go to a home or to a rescue facility. They filed legal papers to try to save Ace’s life.
It all fell on deaf ears. Even though an injunction had been served to DAC giving Ace a stay of execution, the staff at the facility claims they never got the injunction. When the 4-day hold had expired, Ace life was taken. Ace was killed because of the ignorance of BSL.
Not only was he murdered, but he was murdered a day earlier than what had been told to the public, clearly to avoid the inevitable protests that were going to take place.
The petition linked below is directed at the White House and the goal is 25,000 signatures. It asks that any government-subsidized shelters be required to work with local rescues to save the animals, rather than just murder them because of their breed. It asks that BSL be brought to an end so that innocent dogs won’t be killed just because of an accident of birth. The last day to sign the petition is December 10th, so time is of the essence here.
Ace has been a catalyst for the evils of BSL. BSL is a cancer that is spreading around the globe, based on hysteria from the media focusing on the handful of bad deeds done by dogs, rather than the countless good ones. The laws and regulations are directed at the wrong end of the leash.
The video shown with this article was one by two simply amazing advocates and very talented artists, Maria Daines and Paul Killington. Maria and Paul have dedicated their lives to helping bring about change for abused and neglected animals everywhere, and most especially for the innocent bully breeds who have been so unfairly targeted by the laws around the globe. It’s a touching song and video that speaks to the hearts of advocates everywhere who are fighting every day for the changes so desperately needed to save these innocent lives.
Please consider adding your voice to this petition. Please don’t let Ace’s death be in vain. He never harmed another living being. He came seeking help from his abusers. He deserved to have a chance at a loving home, but instead was murdered because of the insanity of BSL.
Rest in peace sweet, gentle Ace. Run free at the Rainbow Bridge. Know that we are still fighting every day so that others like you will not die and the ignorance that is BSL will finally end. Know that your life mattered, precious Ace.
