It might be a couple days late for a white Christmas, but some snow is heading for central Ohio. We’ve seen a whopping 0.4” so far this year, so just about anything would make it the “most” we’ve seen so far. While it doesn’t look like much, we will finally get the chance to see just a little bit of white stuff on the ground by tomorrow night.
We’ll see clouds increase by late this afternoon out ahead of the weather system moving up from the south. The precipitation will initially start out as rain early Tuesday morning. In fact, we may pick up nearly a half inch of rainfall before it changes to snow. As the day progresses, cold air will get pulled into the weather system and change the rain over to snow. Some of the snow may be a little heavy after the initial changeover, but for the most part expect just light to moderate snow from midafternoon lasting into the nighttime hours. It looks like we’ll see rain changing to snow from west to east across the area by early afternoon. It could be as early as 12-1pm in Cincinnati and Dayton, but around 3-4pm in Columbus. This means the evening commute could be a slow one.
The good news is that temperatures will not fall below freezing until well into the evening hours. The rain will change to snow because temperatures up high will get very cold, but it will have a hard time sticking with temperatures near the surface in the middle 30s. We’ll go from around 40 at noon to 34 by 7pm. While the snow is falling, it could pile up a little bit on elevated and grassy surfaces, but the roads should not be too bad. After 9pm, we will see temperatures start to gradually slip below freezing. However, the snow will be just about all wrapped up by then. That is why we are only expecting about an inch in southwest Ohio to perhaps as high as 2 inches in central Ohio. Some locations north and west of Columbus may see slightly higher amounts if the cold air comes a bit faster. Be sure to watch for slick spots late tomorrow night and Wednesday morning as any melted snow on the road could refreeze into ice. Stay with lodeplus.com for the latest updates on the snow.
