Sporting Kansas City President Robb Heineman loves to release or at least hint at news over twitter. On Monday, less than a day after his team lost in the Conference Championship game, Heineman was back at it on twitter.
“…..and btw, making an offer on a Spanish DP today….”
With that tweet, Robb told the fans that they were making an offer on a Spanish DP. The DP stand for Designated Player and those players normally are either bigger names like Beckham, Henry and Sporting KC’s Omar Bravo or younger players who may have future star potential. DP’s have different salary rules and not all of their salary applies to the salary cap budget.
Whenever Heineman tweets info like that, at least two results happen. Fans light up Twitter, Facebook and soccer forums speculating on who it could be and what position they might play. The second result is Sporting Kansas City Manager/Technical Director Peter Vermes is cornered with questions. This time was no different.
Vermes comments when asked about Robb’s tweet concerning the Spanish DP?
Yeah, we have guys we are looking at. It’s the same old run-of-the-mill stuff. Nobody to talk about at the moment, name wise. We’ve already put some offers out on some players. We’re kind of ahead of the game than in years prior. We’ve had a chance to really spend some time and go after some very specific players and positions. Other than that, there ‘s really nothing to comment on.
Could you end up with the league max three DP’s ?
Anything’s possible. It’s so hard to talk about next year at the moment. There’s so many different things.
We’ve got to deal with the protected list, the expansion draft, trades, then reentry draft stage 1, stage 2. There’s just so many things that are coming our way that it’s hard to talk so much about all the players. The idea is to keep the nucleus of this team together.
When Jeferson (one of the teams current DP’s) was brought in on loan over the summer, he came with an option to buy, do you plan on purchasing his contract?
That is something we have to review with the agent and his club. Again it’s something we are going to have to deal with in the off-season. There is an option to buy at the moment.
Jeferson did not seem to contribute very much this year?
It’s hard, he started off well and then he got injured. Then the team really found itself and it was hard to find spots for him.
Would you be willing to bring him back?
There’s no doubt about it, he has great qualities and there is definitely an ability to fit into this team. It’s just whether or not what the price is going to be when we sit down and have our talks with these guys. It has to be priced right.
Tuesday evening Heineman tweeted:
“Man was today better. Serious progress in spain and TONS of great fan emails. Thanks. I hope u r better today 2.”
More speculations fueled and buzz created.
