How to Stay Active
Staying active in the wintertime can be one of the hardest things to do. Its cold outside, you have more time to spend with family, stress levels can be high, and your schedule is quite busy. Although these things come with the seasons change, we can not use these as excuses, we can look at these as things that may change our life for a couple months but we can still stay fit and healthy during this chilly season.
Being active in the winter time is actually one of the best times to be active, and there is actually a little secret that winter brings that will help us burn more calories then other seasons would. Now the gyms that we have in our respective cities are open year round and when it is cold it is a place to go stay warm and workout, but this being the winter, but lets look at some ways to stay active outside this winter.
Activities (calories differ with weight and intensity of activity)
Sledding– Every kid that grew up with snow, can remember sledding with the whole family. This is a great way to burn calories in the winter time and have a great time with your family! An hour of sledding can burn 475-550 calories!
Skating– Pick up hockey game or not, skating in the winter time can burn anywhere from 400-500 calories an hour!
Shovel Snow– Lets hope your not shoveling snow for an hour but if you did, your burning between 400-500 calories in that time!
Snow Ball Fight– One of the greatest winter past times, having a snowball fight can really make you sweat! 315 calories burned in a hour!
Snow Shoe Walk– A high calorie burner as with one hour you burn anywhere from 474-700 calories. Talk about a workout!
Chop Wood– Have a fireplace? Chop wood one day a week for a hour and your burning about 300 calories.
Cross Country Skiing– No need to pretend to be an Olympian here a slow and steady pace sets you up for over 300 calories burned an hour.
Walk– Winter walking is great! There are so many pretty views in the city or country in the wintertime. A simple rule is 100 calories per mile.
But wait! What is that secret calorie burner that winter time brings us? COLD! In the cold our bodies have to woke extra hard to keep out internal body temp. up so that we don’t freeze. Wayne Askew a professor at the University of Utah said “we will burn between 3-7 percent more calories when you are cold.”
