WILMINGTON — St. Elizabeth struggled from the field in a 53-40 loss to John Carroll (Bel Air, Md.) in the championship game of the Delaware Cup at the Diamond State Classic Thursday night at the St. E Center.
The Vikings fell behind in the third quarter, 28-19, after an eight-point run by the Patriots, but fought back to take a 35-34 lead into the final stanza. The third-quarter comeback was led by Gabby Julian, who scored six points in the period, although all five players scored as they clawed back. Two free throws in the first minute of the last quarter stretched the lead to three, but John Carroll outscored St. Elizabeth, 19-3, in the last seven minutes for the win. All three of the Vikings’ remaining points came on free throws .
Emily Soller led the Patriots with 21 points, including five three-point shots and an old-fashioned three on a basket plus a foul shot. Soller was named the outstanding player of the Delaware Cup bracket. Yemaya Johnson added 16 for the Patriots.
Jocelyn Rodriguez scored 12 for St. Elizabeth, and Julian and Macy Robinson each had eight.
In the third-place game of the Delaware Cup earlier Thursday, Wilmington Friends lost to Walt Whitman (Md.), 50-44.
In other action Thursday at the tournament, Appoquinimink High School won the B+ Foundation Cup with a 52-42 win over Damascus High School of Maryland. Padua took third place in this bracket earlier in the day with a 61-50 win over Caesar Rodney.
