Superfoods no fancy labeling here they are found in your local grocery store or farmers market. They help promote weight control, wellness and loaded with nutrients to help fight disease. Everyone from physicians to nutritionists to alternative medicine practitioners have their choices. So what foods are in the forefront of the ongoing lists among lists?
Cherries seem to be one superfood most health professionals will agree on. Cherries seem to have a long list when it comes to health and healing. One great thing they are low in calories and have been used since around the 1950’s by those who endure gout or arthritis. This fruit is packed with antioxidants and fiber. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health had found women that consumed beans at least twice weekly had a 24% decreased risk for the development of breast cancer. Numerous studies have also associated beans to reducing the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and colon cancer.
Green tea seems to have everyone’s vote when it comes to health. The benefits from the tea seem mainly due to its high content of flavonoids and is food source for catechins that are more powerful than vitamins C and E when it comes to stopping oxidative damage to cells. Studies have also found a link between green tea consumption and a decrease risk for several cancers including lung, breast, bladder and skin. So grab a cup a few times a day and relish in all those antioxidants and other powerful compounds that come in that cup.
Fish with omega 3 has been known for a long time to be heart healthy but did you know it can help your eyes. A study had found that women who consumed fish with omega 3 at least once a week had a less chance of getting age related macular degeneration. Other studies have also shown that it just may be able to help prevent the disease. More trails are still needed but we all know one for for sure it is good for heart health.
Broccoli still running strong in the superfood listing. Just one cup will give you over 200 percent of the recommend daily allowance for vitamin C and nearly half as much for vitamins K and A. It’s phytochemicals battle cancer by counteracting carcinogens and speeding up their elimination from the body. Those phytonutrients in broccoli help protect against cancers of skin, breast, prostate and cervical.
Dark chocolate is food that is really good for you. Those antioxidants in that dark chocolate act like Packman by devouring those free radicals but avoid the milk when having the chocolate according to report done by Italy’s National Institute for Food and Nutrition Research. It appears that milk may interfere with the absorption of the antioxidants in the chocolate. Dark chocolate contains cacao phenols that are known to lower blood pressure. However, do not eat too much due to calories. A 100 grams bar of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Bar has 531 calories so do not eat too much.
Walnuts have been linked with slowing down breast cancer growth and can lower your risk for heart disease. Keep in mind they are high in fat but the good kind plus they also contain omega 3’s.
Is it a fruit or vegetable? It really does not matter much when it comes to tomatoes for women’s health.
Tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene to fight cancer and vitamins A and C along with phytochemicals and if you love them raw they will provide your body with potassium.
Whole grains are being promoted in diets. They help with digestive health and heart healthy due to the fiber content and maintaining blood sugar. Whole grains energize you throughout your day and at the same time aide in improving your cholesterol level. Guidelines say six ounces a day is sufficient unless your over fifty then make it five.
