With the holiday season officially upon us, it is time to start looking at our holiday shopping lists. In addition to that, there is also a large movement to support local businesses, and this is the perfect time to start showing your support. Yes, of course a lot of your holiday shopping will be at your big-box retail stores, that just can’t be avoided. However, perhaps you can scale down and look at some other options to help support your local businesses as well. Need some help? Well here are just a few ideas.
1. Support the arts
Every city has a local arts scene. What art-loving person wouldn’t love a couple of tickets to a local play or musical? Check out your local theatre guild and you’d be amazed at how much art there is out there.A quick search of your local lodeplus.com page will also likely show you some great theatre resources.
Not a theatre fan? What about taking the gift recipient out for a day of visiting art galleries or to hear a local band play? Check out your nearby art museums or other cultural centers for gift certificates and other awesome gift giving ideas.
2. Independent dining
Dinner for two is always a wonderful gift to give, but this time try looking for some of those lesser-known hidden gems that are locally owned. Not sure if the restaurant is any good? Check out local reviews to see what independently owned restaurants are your best bets.
3. Craft it up
Hand made gifts are a great way to say that you care. From knitting scarves and hats to making scrapbooks or photo collages, anything that takes time and a bit of creativity to pull together will show that special someone that you care. Not the crafty type? Most cities have lots of arts fairs and crafting expos where all sorts of crafty people come together to show off their goods. And if those don’t work, then check out Etsy – where you can order some awesome handmade goodies online.
4. Beautify locally
Everyone gets their hair cut (well, almost everyone.) How about getting that special someone a gift certificate to a local salon or barbershop? Nail salons, massages, facials, even chiropractic care could make a great holiday gift.
5. Local auto care
Everyone that drives a car will need to get auto care. Even if they have a brand new car, they still need oil changes, car washes, tire rotations, and all those expenses that pop up when we are least prepared for it. Visit local auto mechanics and give the gift of peace of mind.
