Being fairly new to the world of sushi, I have tried quite a few places looking for something I really enjoy. I have found that sushi is a treat and I really do like most of what I’ve tried. In some cases, the flavor is lacking and dull and in other cases it’s exactly what I’m looking for.
The first place I tried sushi in Anchorage is called Sushi Ya. Approximately four years ago, I went to a luncheon there and while I enjoyed it, I can’t say I was overwhelmed with satisfaction. The restaurant was old and dark and the food was just okay. However the person who chose to go there said it was terrific sushi and I wouldn’t have known any different. Since then, I’ve tried many other places in town but had not been back to Sushi Ya until last night.
Walking into the building, I wondered if I had walked into the right place. There were no more high booths which contributed to the darkness, I’m sure. The dining area is now open and so well lit. Asian decor in the restaurant brings a fun and fresh vibe and the way the dining room set up is designed makes you feel like they are anxiously awaiting to fill every table. And by the time I left, nearly every table was filled.
Service was spectacular! Water was set on the table immediately upon seating along with teh menu. Between the two women that served the table, nothing was ever found to be empty and space was consistently being made for the next and main course.
The only complaint that I have is that the menu is way too large. There must be every choice of sushi known on that menu. It literally is a book. After what felt like an eternityof time spent review the menu the order for a best friend roll and fried rice was placed and then the meal began. First, the green tea was served. Next, the noodles in vinegar along with soup and salad. Finally, and very quickly I might add, came the roll and rice. Let me just start by saying that the plating was immaculate and decorative, covered with colorful sauces. Best of all was the mix of flavors in the roll. It had the perfect level of spiciness and crunchiness as well as the texture of the salmon being ideal for a sushi roll. Of all the rolls I’ve tried, this one is my new favorite. And Sushi Ya is definitely a recommended sushi eatery.
