A poodle makes an excellent dog for many people, especially those with allergy issues. Aside from the health benefits of the poodle, these dogs are very intelligent, playful and make great family pets. However, poodles require much more attention than most other breeds. They must be brushed, bathed and clipped on a regular basis for good health and mental fitness. The friendly staff at your local Rockford Petsmart at 6320 East State Street or Petco at 6305 East State Street can help you with grooming tips for your Poodle’s top knot as well as supply you with all the necessary dog grooming tools. The poodle is very proud and loves to be groomed. A show poodle loves that extra attention. In perfecting the topknot, the dog will just lie down while you prepare it for the ring. Spraying the finished topknot can keep it in position for the show.
In order to groom your poodle dog’s topknot, you will need to acquire a pin brush, comb, dog spray coat conditioner and dog hair spray or coat dressing. All these items can be purchased at a local Petsmart or Petco.
To begin the process, place your dog on the grooming table, lying down in a sphinx position where your dog is down with rear legs under the dog and head straight up and attentive. This gives you the perfect view to work comfortably on the topknot.
Brush the topknot completely, blending in from the neck and be sure that there are no mats. Lightly spray with a dog conditioning spray as you brush through the topknot. It is important not to brush a dry coat and cause breakage.
Relax and enjoy the grooming process with your poodle. These dogs love to be groomed and will co-operate when they feel the connection with you. If they feel your stress or any anger, they too will be stressed and restless.
Use a comb to fan the hair upward and outward at the top of the head to blend with the rest of the coat. Scissor the topknot to appropriate length required to create a balanced show style. Further fan the hair in sections from front to back, while spraying each section with conditioning spray.
Spray the finished topknot with a fine mist of coat dressing or hairspray to keep the hair in place. This should be done just prior to entering the show ring. Never over spray which can cause the hair to look stiff and loose its natural texture.
Additional topknot grooming tips – Just use short quick sprays of conditioner while combing and brushing the top knot. You do not want to soak the hair while grooming, just spray a light mist to the top knot.
