In what is turning out to be the week of the early Winter premieres, TNT’s The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles lead the premiere pack, returning with new episodes for the winter halves of their seasons on Monday, November 28, 2011.

The TV moms to watch in these two shows are supporting cast members, but they each still manage to make an indelible impact on their respective shows. Before we dive too fully into that, though, let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to from two of TNT’s greatest dramas.
For The Closer these final five episodes of season 7 mark the beginning of the end for this police drama. Yes, our Monday nights will be a little emptier without Brenda Leigh Johnson and the gaggle of committed men on her squad.
…Or are they? Committed, that is. If you’ll recall there is a major leak in her department and as these five episodes wind down, we are promised to find out just who that leak is. Considering these men have practically become a part of her family, this revelation promises to be brutal for Brenda.
Speaking of family, the season won’t close without a visit from Brenda’s parents, Willie Ray (Francis Sternhagen) and Clay Johnson (Barry Corbin). Unfortunately, we’ve learned that their visit won’t be all laughs and light-heartedness, as the show’s star, Kyra Sedgwick, revealed in TNT’s winter preview that one of her TV parents has fallen ill.
Much to look forward to with The Closer’s final episodes of season 7 – who do you think the leak is?
As for Rizzoli & Isles, you’ll recall we left season 2 with the close of an incredibly intense, dramatic arc. Jane’s personal real-life boogeyman, Hoyt, was finally sent on to the afterlife accompanied by a heart-stopping brush with death for Maura.
If you have yet to add Rizzoli & Isles to your must-record DVR list, let me clue you in to what you’ve been missing. On the outside looking in, you could say this is yet another cop show complete with quirky medical examiner. However it’s just so much more than that.
Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander who play Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, respectively, are a perfect combination. They are strong women at their best – displaying killer instincts in their prospective fields while maintaining an enviable friendship. Add to their chemistry that of the supporting cast members and you’ve got serious reason to check out ‘yet another cop show.’ One of the greatest things about Rizzoli & Isles is that it can certainly bring the drama that we’ve come to expect from TNT, but the humor that runs through the episodes catches you pleasantly by surprise.
Included in those laughs and outstanding supporting cast members is Lorraine Bracco who plays Angela, Jane’s mom. She took on a more present role in season 2 and the show was better for it. She’s loving, smothering, and overwhelmingly awesome.
This second half of season 2 promises to delve more deeply into the relationships this show loves to explore, including giving viewers more background on the Korsak (Bruce McGill) and Frost (Lee Thompson) characters. Stay tuned…
