‘The Prehistoric Collection: From Dinosaurs to the Dawn of Man’ is an 8 disc collection of fantastic video from the History Channel. It includes the best-selling releases: Jurassic Fight Club, Prehistoric Megastorms, Journey to 10,000 BC, and Clash of the Cavemen. The set comes in an attractive red and gold box with a green dinosaur on the front and contains 4 slim DVD cases. Each of these cases hold 2 discs. The entire 8 disc set includes more than 17 hours of spectacular video and commentary by experts. This DVD set is available locally at the Barnes and Noble store in Towson, MD.
The first 4 discs of the set are from the popular TV series “Jurassic Fight Club” which recreates battles between prehistoric creatures using the evidence that was left behind in the fossil record. They look at the behavior of modern day animals for indications of how prehistoric creatures might react in a similar situation. Your journey into the prehistoric past begins with the introduction to Majungatholus, one of the most hideous dinosaurs yet discovered. The first Jurassic Fight Club battle is between a male and female Majungatholus. The male has only one thing on his mind but his advances are rejected. The female is intent on driving him away to defend her young offspring. The ensuing battle is very realistic and exciting with a surprising ending. Before you finally get to see each epic battle, you will learn about each of the fighters involved and their strengths and weaknesses, if any.
You’ll see lots of your favorite dinosaurs including T-Rex, Raptors, Stegasaurus, and Triceratops as well as some that might be unfamiliar to you such as Majungatholus, Nanotyrannus, Ceratosaurus, Allosaurus, Edmontosaurus and others. Later battles will also introduce you to the Short-Faced Bear that stood 12 ft. Tall and weighed and incredible 2500 lb.. and a tenacious fighter called the American Lion that stood only 5 ft. tall and weighed only 700 lb.. but had a bite force of 1800 lb..
The lush ecosystem in the oceans gave rise to the apex predator of the seas, Megalodon, ancient ancestor of the modern day Great White Shark. More than 50 feet in length and a bite force of 20 tons, Megalodon preyed on the giant Biting Sperm Whales. Megalodon could bite through the bones of whales with the greatest of ease. No creature in the sea was safe from Megalodon, not even other Megalodons.
A 40 foot Biting Sperm whale was not the gentle giant we know today. It was the largest whale in the sea and as terrifying in its ferocity as Megalodon. These whales lived in groups called pods. Their dagger-like teeth and battering ram heads, made them worthy competition for Megalodon as they hunted for prey. Bite marks in fossilized whale bones prove that Megalodon sought them as a food source.
The epic battle between these super predators is recreated in exciting detail when Megalodon attacks a lone whale. The crippled whale issues a cry for help and his pod comes to the rescue. Shark lovers will enjoy this video battle.
The Prehistoric Collection continues with 4 additional discs of incredible video that is both exciting and informative. Discs 5 and 6 explore Mega Disasters that have impacted life on Earth and changed land and water borders of the continents. You will learn about Hypercanes which are hurricanes that are 20 miles high and have wind speeds around 500 mph and a Mega Tsunamis which is a wall of water more than 100 ft. high with the power to obliterate everything in its path.
I found the section on Noah’s Great Flood to be particularly fascinating. Experts find evidence that they believe supports the story of the great flood in the Bible and the devastation that resulted.
Disc 6 finishes up with video about Volcanic Winter, Comet Storms, and the British Superflood which was a prehistoric mega flood that separated Britain from the rest of Europe. A BonusFeature explores the Asteroid Apocalypse possibility of another asteroid striking the Earth causing a modern day extinction event like the one that killed the dinosaurs.
The final 2 discs introduce us to the Clash of the Cavemen. Apparently fossil evidence shows that Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon Man existed together in the same time period. By viewing examples of their cave drawings, carvings and tools, experts can get some idea of the differences in their cognitive abilities and how they may have lived. New evidence in DNA research is also discussed.
Journey to 10,000 BC is the topic of the final disc. At the end of the Ice Age, early humans traveled to what is now North America, the final land mass yet unexplored. Man challenged prehistoric beasts for this new continent. Scientists explore how these people lived and survived this dangerous new world to find out if they were predators or prey.
Of all the Dinosaur related videos I’ve reviewed recently, this is my favorite.I found it particularly refreshing that the experts admitted that nobody knows exactly what happened in prehistoric times but the video recreations are their best guess given all the evidence. The creatures in the videos are not given cute names or personalities as with other videos we’ve explored. Each segment opens with a warning that it is graphic video that might not be suitable for all audiences. There is a lot of blood and gore throughout, so you should keep that in mind for younger viewers. If you love dinosaurs and sharks as I do, you will find an ample supply of both in this set. It would make the perfect addition to anyone’s video collection.
