Yesterday was such a kick-back relaxing day, I totally forgot to write this article. So, welcome to the new Saturday edition of “The Week Ahead in Los Feliz.”
Normally, I would be spending Sunday morning at my favorite spot to watch football – Hooters of Burbank. However this weekend I don’t have a favorite team to watch, as my Miami Dolphins were the victims of the Romo curse on Thursday, losing to the Cowboys 20-19. Regardless of the outcome, it was a great game. What team(s) do you like? Where do you watch football? Even though most of us have TVs, there’s nothing like the fun of watching football surrounded by lots of screens and people all screaming for their favorite teams. Looking forward to getting back next week.
Great movies continue at our local theaters here in Los Feliz. At the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3, you can catch “Hugo” or “J. Edgar” at 2:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m. or 8:45 p.m., as well as “My Week With Marilyn,” screening at 1:45 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theater, it’s the latest for George Clooney as he brings us “The Descendants,” with screenings at 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:40 p.m.
Skylight Books is taking a break for the holidays, but it’s still a great place to shop for local and hard-to-find indie books. I went out there yesterday in support of Small Business Saturday and bought a book. Check out some of their amazing deals at their website – www.skylightbooks.com.
Monday night at the Steve Allen Theater, catch “Cartoon Dump!” at 8 p.m., with hosts Frank Connif and Erica Doering ($10 general admission, $5 CFI members). You can get more info at www.steveallentheater.tix.com.
Tuesday night, don’t forget about the annual Holiday Party hosted by Songsalive! and Songnet at the Mint. Highlights include performances by members of Songsalive! and Songnet, as well as a special performance by J Walker. Lots of door prizes and raffle prizes as well. A donation of $5 per person is asked to help with the costs. Doors open at 7 and music lasts till midnight. Come out and support these songwriting organizations.
The Hotel Cafe is one of the premier places to enjoy both up and coming indie artists as well as the elite. On Tuesday night, catch a special performance by Danni Rosner at 9 p.m. Then on Wednesday, the singing bartender, Jake Newton, brings his energy for a special show at 8 p.m. Then on Thursday, the winter residency continues for Jamie “the” Drake at 8 p.m., followed by the incredible Elizaveta at 10 p.m. Don’t forget the valet parking for just $6 on the weekend and $5 the rest of the time. Details can be found at www.hotelcafe.com.
Shout it Out Promotions has three great shows this week. On Wednesday night at Genghis Cohen, prepare to be wowed with three amazing artists – Derek Rocchini, Eddie Cohn (nephew of Marc Cohn (“Walking in Memphis,” “Silver Thunderbird”) and Jess Penner. Music begins at 8 p.m. with a $10 cover. Then on Thursday night at Genghis, it’s Sweet Potatoes, followed by Adrian Bourgeois, making a stop on his L.A. to LA Tour. Music starts at 8 p.m. with a $10 cover. Genghis is an All Ages venue.
On Saturday night at Molly Malone’s, catch Rolling Stones Magazine cover finalist Skyler Stonestreet at 9, followed by rising superstars David and Devine at 10 and the incredible superduo Mots Nouveaux (composed of Aaron Beaumont and Emma Fitzpatrick) at 11 p.m. Cover is just $10 at the door and the venue is 21+.
Remember, there is also plenty of great music locally. Also check iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube – be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent – then share it with us all.
