In a new project segment from lodeplus.com, this is the first edition of weekly postings of Westmont movie notes for upcoming week. While I post movie reviews after seeing them, forward older reviews for DVD and Blu-ray releases that come your way in stores for New Movie Tuesday, and provide a quarterly movie preview article and checklist, these new “The Week Ahead” posts are meant to keep things current and in the present for each week. Enjoy!
NEW MOVIE TUESDAY– DVD/Blu-rays in stores and available for rental November 15th
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides— I refused to cough $11 for a retread effort of Disney trying to squeeze every last drop out this overblown franchise and out of Johnny Depp’s one-note-joke Jack Sparrow. Stores will be hoping you not only buy the new movie, but also double-dip on a boxed set of all four movies. Buyer beware!
The Lion King 3D— Speaking of double-dipping, no one does it better than Disney. After already releasing a glorious Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy “Diamond Edition” set less than a month ago, thanks to its successful 3D release in theaters last month, they’re ready to gouge you again for $30 to go 3D Blu-ray. There’s no denying how great the movie is, but if you really have to double or even triple-dip, you have a problem.
Larry Crowne— Tom Hank’s summer charmer and second directorial effort is a breath of fresh air that deserves your viewing and attention. With great lead performances from Hanks and Julia Roberts, it rises above being a knock-off of TV’s Community. Worth a rental, but not an instant buy. (my full review)
These releases will be available for rental at your local Westmont area Redbox locations and Family Video locations and for purchase at your local Westmont area Best Buy, Frys, and Target locations.
THEATRICAL RELEASES for Friday, November 18th
Happy Feet Two– More singing and dancing with new additions Sofia Vergara, Matt Damon, Pink, and Brad Pitt joining returning penguins Elijah Wood and Robin Williams. In connection with DVD shopping, Best Buy has a very cool offer of an $8 Movie Cash ticket to see this new movie if you buy either Happy Feet or March of the Penguins on DVD. Good deal there! (trailer)
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1– I hear it’s got something to do with vampire, werewolves, pouting, emoting, and sparkles. I think it’s a sequel… couldn’t tell you… I haven’t seen any of them. I prefer my vampires to kill people and not sparkle and make babies. (trailer)
The Descendants (limited)– George Clooney, after his own directorial effort, The Ides of March, will undoubtedly ping the Oscar radar again with this buzzed-about father dramedy set in Hawaii from renowed Sideways and Election director Alexander Payne. This will be in limited release, meaning you’re going to have to head to downtown Chicago to track it down. This is definitely my choice for the week! (trailer)
Of course, here are your local Westmont Showtimes to catch those new releases in theaters. Thanks for the first edition of “The Week Ahead”
