‘X Factor’ finalist Stacy Francis has been a Flint area favorite throughout the competition. Francis’ performance last night for rock week met with mixed reviews from 3 out of 4 judges. I spoke with some local fans this morning who still support Francis, but didn’t care for the Meatloaf version of the song she sang. Audrey Hale of Flint, who has been a big Francis supporter said:
‘I know Stacy says she really connected with that song, but I didn’t get the connection. I know Meatloaf is a rock star. But, I wonder if Nicole played the Celine Dion version of the song to her at any time during rehearsals. I don’t think the Meatloaf version fit Stacy’s voice at all and I hope she doesn’t get voted off because of it. I really like Stacy. She has one of the strongest voices on the show and I think she deserves to stay.’
During her video montage, Stacy Francis and her mentor Nicole Scherzinger both agreed that they work really well together. In fact, Francis said she feels Nicole is more than her mentor, she’s a friend. They both said they wanted to choose something Francis can connect with. They also agreed she has a dark place of pain to draw from in her past, while she’s not in Scherzinger’s opinion, ‘a stereotypical rock singer’, she can relate to the Meatloaf song ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’. LA Reid felt she did a great job, but Paula Abdul dubbed it her ‘least favorite song you’ve ever performed’.
Simon Cowell said:
‘I thought the song was a horrible choice. I wanted rock, that was a pebble. It was soft, it was the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton Hotel with their backs turned. You’ve got to sort yourself out. This is not a cabaret competition.’
Some local fans sympathize with Francis and the kind of struggle she’s faced in the past. There’s no question that she has an amazing voice. However, J. Statler of Flint, for one, is concerned that Scherzinger is skipping around a little too much with the song choices. Statler told me:
‘I hope Nicole isn’t creating some sort of identity crisis for Stacy as an artist with all of the varied song choices. The Meatloaf song was just not the way to go, and Nicole should have told Stacy that when she suggested it. Taking risks is great, but not to the extent that the risks send her home. I really like Stacy. I think she has what it takes to win and I’d like to see her do it. But after this week, I’m a little afraid America won’t continue to get who she is.’
It’s obvious the Francis and Scherzinger have a mutual respect for each other and a strong connection. It will be important to see if America connected to Stacy last agreed with her song choice.
‘The X Factor’ results show airs live tonight in Flint on WSMH FOX66 at 8 PM EST.
