Janet Devlin was once said to be the frontrunner to win the “X Factor” U.K. in 2011 when the competition began, but in the end, the 17-year-old singer came in fifth place. She was eliminated from the competition in the episode that ITV televised on November 27, 2011. The elimination had been widely predicted after Devlin’s embarrassing performance in the previous night’s epsiode, when she forgot the lyrics to the two songs that she sang. (She later blamed the mistakes on feeling sick and being distracted by trying not to vomit during the performance.)
Devlin and 19-year-old Misha Bryan ended up in the bottom two of getting votes from the public.
In the sing-off between Devlin and Bryan, Devlin sang Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” while Bryan performed Irene Cara’s “Out Here on My Own.”

In a majority vote, three of the show’s judges (Tulisa Contostavlos, Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh) chose to eliminate Devlin. Kellly Rowland abstained from voting because she has been Devlin’s and Bryan’s mentor on the show.
The guest performers in the November 27 episode were Jessie J (who sang “Who You Are”) and former “X Factor” U.K. finalist Olly Murs, who did his song “Dance With Me Tonight” with the Muppets. Murs is also the co-host of “The Xtra Factor.”

At the beginning of the show, the Top 15 “X Factor” U.K. finalists of 2011 joined JLS and One Direction to sing their charity single “Wishing on a Star.” Proceeds from “Wishing on a Star” (a cover version of the Rose Royce hit) will benefit the children’s medical charity Together for Short Lives, which is part of ACT & Children’s Hospices U.K.
As expected, disgraced former “X Factor” U.K. finalist Frankie Cocozza was not part of the performance. Cocozza, who was in the Top 7, left the show on November 8, 2011, because of a drug-related rule violation. (He bragged in front of “X Factor” U.K. staffers that he had used cocaine at a party that took place on November 5, 2011.) Cocozza was replaced by previously eliminated finalist Amelia Lily, who was voted back onto the show by viewers on November 12, 2011.
