Viewer voting has now begun for “The X Factor” U.S. in 2011. And based on comments made on the Intertnet, one contestant out of the show’s Top 12 finalists has been named the most as a fan favorite: Melanie Amaro.
Other finalists who were the most frequently mentioned as those who got people’s votes and/or were their favorite contestants of the show were Josh Krajcik, Rachel Crow and Drew.
On November, 2, 2011, the show’s 12 finalists performed in anepisode that was opened up to viewer voting for the first time. (Click here for a recap of the November 2 episode.)
In the November 3 episode, one finalist will be eliminated, based on who got the lowest number of votes.
According to overnight Nielsen ratings, the November 2 episode got 11.5 million U.S. viewers, which was a decrease from the previous episode’s 12 million viewers. However, “The X Factor” U.S. was once again No. 1 in its time slot among the coveted advertiser demographic of 18-to-49-year-olds, by getting a 3.9 share with this demographic. (The final ratings for the November 2 episode may have slight adjustments.)
Meanwhile, TV critics slammed the show’s judges for being too nice to the contestants in the episode that aired on November 2. They singled out Cowell in particular for over-praising some of the contestants. Critics expressed disappointment that Cowell wasn’t showing much edge to the contestants in this episode, considering his reputation for being a tough judge on talent shows.
As for which “X Factor” U.S. finalist is the best, most of the critics agreed that Amaro is the clear standout.
Here is a sampling of what some media outlets said about the episode:
The New York Times:
The show’s producers seem to have a fairly low opinion of America’s technological savvy, because they kept hammering at these voting options repeatedly, the way “Sesame Street” tells preschoolers again and again that the letter M starts lots of words and comes between L and N in the alphabet, hoping the data will eventually sink in. Here’s an idea: You know how these competitions often have one show devoted to performances, another just for giving the weekly results? (The results show for this week’s “X Factor” is Thursday night.) They should also have a show devoted exclusively to voting options. People who feel as if they need a lengthy tutorial in how to cast a vote could watch it, and everyone else could go to the movies that night. Then, on the performance shows, maybe the singers would have time to actually sing.
The judges — Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid, Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul — seem to have decided to take the rest of the show off. With the inexplicable exception of Mr. Bell, whom they dissed somewhat, and Lakoda Rayne, whose wardrobe bothered Mr. Cowell, the performers drew nothing but gushing praise from the Wise Four, no matter how ordinary their efforts. If that’s all the judges have to offer, maybe now would be a good time for them to disappear? Or would you prefer to see more of them? Me, I say free up some time so some, or maybe all, of these acts could actually sing a full-length song.
The judges did not offer a great deal of guidance beyond praising everyone’s performance. True, Simon and Nicole did snap at each other again. At one point, Simon dismissed her comment by saying “the grownups are talking.” That’s the kind of substantial critique that “Idol” has lacked since he left. Nicole later responded by telling him “sometimes less is more,” which in this case referred to his criticism of her song selection and not the strategy she uses while picking her wardrobe.
But the musical acts could do no wrong. It got more than a little ridiculous. “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now as good as you,” Simon told the Stereo Hogzz. Really? Because I’m pretty sure everyone watching has a ton of examples.
I appreciated the Hogzz’ shiny gold knee pads, and was that one guy wearing a fanny pack? I was so busy settling into X Factor Migraine Mode and marveling at the circus that I could barely concentrate on the vocals.
No mattah! Simon says: “I don’t think there’s a band in the world right now that’s as good as you.”
I should be used to it by now, but I get so annoyed when Simon makes sweeping and patently false statements like “It gets hard for him to show the kind of emotion and enthusiasm some of the younger kids have” re: LeRoy Bell. That sort of thing depends on personality, not age. And I think especially this week, with Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” LeRoy did channel emotion through his voice. Also, what exactly is so “dated” about having a piano player as backup? Aggggggggh!
I have no complaints about Melanie Amaro’s rendition of “Desperado” except that she sang “Ain’t it funny how the story goes away?” instead of “how the feeling goes away.” It actually made sense because it occurred directly after a shot of Simon smiling smugly. He’s the one spinning all these overblown tales of praise and awe for mediocre contestants, while all Melanie has to do is sing a song from 1973 with no backup spectacle and blow everyone away. I loved how she created her own high notes in the final chorus. “Right now you are the one to beat. Trust me,” said coach Simon. This is no fiction.
Here is a sampling viewer comments on the Internet:
