The end if 2011 is here, so seeing many local print types taking year in review routes, I figured; who in Syracuse had as much access to music as I have this year? None. To be honest, we have different styles and tastes. My readers are nationwide and abroad, as well as local, so I try and make you all happy. It’s not easy really; I have to pay attention to what’s brewing here in the area and stay abreast of events unfolding in Germany or the UK. I like mixing them in together.
In the two plus years now that I have been writing for lodeplus.com, I have spoken with some musical heroes, local up and comers, local musicians that moved away and done some pretty damn big things. I started out looking for respect, maybe even some acknowledgement, I have no idea why. It’s a small market and really, unless you’re in one of two publications (printed press), people act as if you are on the outside. Funny thing is, that is what those people that moved on have told me about the area.
I won’t bore you with stories of where I came from, qualifications (zzz), things that I never had done and had me wide-eyed, or when I went to a show and interviewed a famous person and was sooooo excited. That would be like snapping my bubblegum and acting cute. What I pride myself on is the plethora of emails and phone calls from musicians, PR companies, and record labels; they all love my style and how I make it about the music and not about me or my opinions. Who cares what I think? You want to see and hear what I do, not my opinions. I do my best to keep it that way. I have also found that imitation is both flattering and sad. That is one for the coming year.
So, without further ado, here is what I consider my favorite 12 articles from 2011. I loved just about all of the ones that I wrote, but these were big on the ‘hit’ meter online.

Ina Hill, the bassist in Judas Priest, easily topped the list. Getting a call via Sony and speaking with him from his home in the UK was hands down a thrill. The concert itself was intense. Benny Mardones was impeccable and it was like I’ve known him for years. I look forward to more with him in February. Matt Bachand is amazing and one of those guys in a personal favorite band, Shadows Fall. I’ll be speaking with them again soon. Lee Anderson, well, show me another rock singer with as much experience here and pulling in the crowds. Plus, I’ve known him since high school. Kimberly Schad just blew me away. Her voice is fantastic as well as her musical abilities, no shock there if you know the family. Liz Nowak is just an amazing woman and defers credit immediately. Getting other peoples thoughts was huge in making that one so successful. Shannon Larkin, simply put, Godsmack. Enough said. The Cover Bands piece was more a personal observation after a vacation. I wanted to point out a few things. OTEP Shamaya, while she was a bit short with her responses was still a thrill. I love that band. Kevin Dean was a cool piece and screams for a follow up soon to catch up with a band that has been busy, very busy. Descending Angel was fun; those guys crack me up and have some potential. I wait to see what they have in store.
I promise to keep publishing content that you all want to see, interview locally and internationally, and cover the shows that don’t bore me. Look below for my contact information; I’m always open to suggestions. Rock on Syracuse!
