It’s another big weekend celebration and another chance to hit the slopes. Whether you are going out tomorrow for the day, tomorrow night to celebrate or Sunday to get outside and begin your resolutions, it will be a good weekend to hit the ski slopes for the New Year.
The National Weather Service forecast for the Johnstown area this weekend does have some glitches. Temperatures are not expected to be cold enough at night for snow making until Sunday night. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-forties for Saturday and Sunday and overnight lows tonight and Saturday night in the mid-thirties. Sunday the lows are once again expected to dip into the mid-twenties. Showers are expected overnight tonight until about 1:00 pm tomorrow and then partly cloudy for Saturday. Showers are expected to return by Sunday turning to snow overnight Sunday.
Seven Springs is one place to be this weekend. The resort has five different activities going on for New Year’s Eve including a Family Tubing Party and the Torchlight Parade. Currently they are reporting a base of 10 to 22 inches and they have 16 trails open for the weekend. The resort is reporting wet packed groomed conditions on the trails. They now have 16 features open throughout the ski area including 5 to 6 features at the Arctic Blast terrain park. In addition they will have eleven lanes open at the snow tubing park.
Blue Knob is reporting some good slope conditions and even three inches of natural snow last night. They were reporting a base between 10 and 28 inches. They are expecting to have four trails open. They are Upper Mambo Alley and Lower Mambo Alley, Upper Route 66 and Upper Short Way. They are also expecting to have some terrain features open on Upper Short Way. The snow tubing park is not yet open, but expected to open soon. They will have two lifts operating this weekend. They will be open Saturday from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am until 9:00 pm.
Hidden Valley Resort also has a few celebrations for New Year’s Eve. They have their own Torchlight Parade down Cobra Slope at 7:00 pm as well as a Family New Year’s Celebration in the South Ridge Room and a New Year’s Buffet at the Clock Tower Restaurant. The resort should have 12 trails open this weekend, but no terrain features will be open. They have a base of 13 to 27 inches. The snow tubing park will have 5 lanes open this weekend. They will be open from 9:00 am until 9:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
WISP in McHenry, MD is looking at some good skiing this weekend too. They should have 11 groomed trails open with 6 features at the Pro Park this weekend. They currently have an average base of 13 inches. They will be open from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm on Saturday and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Sunday. They do have the Snow tubing park open with seven lanes and the ice skating rink is also open.
Mystic Mountain near Farmington, PA is now operating for the year also. They currently are reporting a base from 12 to 20 inches. They have 5 groomed trails opened from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm. They do not have their tubing park open and do not have an estimated date yet.
So celebrate the New Year by heading out to the slopes this weekend Johnstown. Get out there and have fun on the slopes.
