Undefeated, Steven Martinez (11-0), whom is a former three time Golden Gloves Champion, will be featured on the new season of ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights on January 6th, 2012. The hard punching Martinez has not gotten much publicity, but the televised fight on ESPN2 should create some exposure for the young prospect hailing from the Bronx, NY. DiBella Entertainment, whom serves a Martinez’s promotional team, has high expectations for Martinez and it seems they are going to kick off 2012 with a campaign for Martinez to be known as a top contender in the Junior Middleweight division.
However, the campaign run will not be easy as Martinez has been matched up against a strong opponent, Jonathan Cepeda (11-0). Cepeda, whom is also undefeated, comes into this fight as a hard puncher with 10 out of 11 of his wins coming via knockout. For both prospects this fight is a crossing roads fight as the winner will be presented with significant fight opportunities and coverage. On the other hand, the loser will see their stock drop and take a big step back in the rankings for top prospects.
As for Martinez, this fight presents a high stakes opportunity to show the boxing world that he should be considered in the upper echelon of junior middleweight prospects. It seems that DiBella Entertainment and his management team want to move Martinez along quickly and in the public eye as it is rare that we see a highly regarded prospect put in the ring with another undefeated prospect in just there 12th fight.
In Martinez’s favor is confidence as he is coming off of a knockout victory in his previous fight on the undercard of Sergio Martinez vs. Darren Barker. In addition to the knockout victory, Martinez has been privy to sparring sessions with the Middleweight champion of the world, Sergio Martinez, which should provide high caliber training and boost his confidence coming into this fight.
One thing is certain, which is that boxing fans will be given a treat to start off 2012. Martinez and Cepeda are both undefeated and have high stakes in the fight, which should create a fan friendly fight. Furthermore, they both are considered to possess significant punching power, which should make this match up an action filled fight. The winner takes a big step in becoming a contender in the junior middleweight division. Both fighters have gotten themselves this far, let’s see who wants to take it farther.
