2011 was a year which saw plenty of moments and stories that took place in the books of the many GL books. From the end of Brightest Day to War of the Green Lanterns to a new status quo post Flashpoint.
But what moments made us laugh, excited and shocked. Continue below to find out.
10.) Fatality Takes out the New Guardians Alone
The Star Sapphires have been in the GL universe for awhile now, but with the inclusion of the other lantern corps they have fallen a little to the background. However, they have grown a loyal following who have asked for their own ongoing series for years. That hasn’t happened (yet) but in New Guardians, we get to see a Sapphire in a “starring” role.
Fatality was inducted into the Star Sapphires right before Blackest Night and her once vengeance-fueled anger has subsided. But that doesn’t mean you should take her lightly as evident in issue #2 where she takes out Bleez, Munk and Kyle Rayner pretty effortlessly.
Sure this moment didn’t change the shape of the universe but it shows how badass Fatality still is and that just because she wears pink doesn’t mean she won’t hurt you.
9.) Atrocitus and Bleez have Conflicting Views of Vengeance
Atrocitus was a leader of mindless warriors called the Red Lanterns. However, when he figures that he and his corps must be the universe’s “punishers” he knew he couldn’t do it alone. Enter Bleez. Atrocitus gave her mind back so she can help in his mission but she first went to her homeworld to enact revenge on those who harmed her.
The unfortunate two men who crossed her in the past were made examples of. After Bleez murders one of them, she decides to spare the other so that he can live in fear for the rest of his life. Atrocitus has none of that and thrusts his arm into the man’s chest, killing him.
What makes this scene even better is how Atrocitus then preaches to Bleez on how they do things all while the man is still stuck to his arm. The dynamic between these two will certainly drive the book as we head into 2012.
8.) Hal’s “Final” Construct
After Flashpoint, the status quo of the GL universe was changed (we’ll get to that later) so in the new 52 Hal goes to Korugar to vanquish the Sinestro Corps. He is captured and put in a holding cell that absorbs energy. After multiple failed attempts of escape Hal has enough energy for one last construct.
“If you can make one last thing…see one last thing…Before the light goes out”
Hal then creates a construct of Carol Ferris, his long-time love interest. He stares at it and apologizes for possibly the last time. This moment tugged at the heart strings of readers who have seen the ups and downs of the relationship. And it solidifies the true love of Hal and Carol…I think.
7.) Sinestro has a Laugh
After Sinestro meets with Hal and gives him a GL ring, Sinestro propositions Hal to help him rid his homeworld of his own corps. In exchange, Sinestro will help him get his ring back.
Hal agrees to help and says this poignant line.
“I’m coming with you. I’m going to help you clean up your mess. But don’t think you’re better than me.”
Sinestro’s reaction to him is priceless as he just laughs while telling Hal that he is better than him and that the Earth man already knows that before flying off. The Sinestro/Hal dynamic has never been better, and this scene exudes that more than any in the new 52.
6.) Atrocitus Puts the Spectre in his Place
Back during Brightest Day Atrocitus was searching for the Butcher, the Red Lantern Entity. Unfortunately, the Spectre was also searching for it and the two would collide as they rangled the Crimson Rage beast.
But it was the scene after Atrocitus traps the Butcher that lands it on this list. The Spectre is about to “judge” the man who was possessed by the Butcher for killing a man. Atrocitus stops the Spectre and lectures him on how the Spectre’s “law” of eye-for-an-eye is wrong. How the hauntings of friends and family plague those who are hurt. The Spectre is forced to think about this and for one moment the Spectre doubts.
Score one for Atrocitus.
5.) Sinestro Saves an entire bridge alone
After Sinestro creates a ring for Hal, a bridge collapses and he tries to save the people. Sinestro stops him however to show him what the ring can be capable of.
In a show of mastery, Sinestro has the ring save every person on the bridge and rebuild it in seconds. Awesome.
4.) John Stewart Kills Mogo
During the high-stakes event, War of the Green Lanterns the Earth Lanterns are pushed to brink as they face their own mind-controlled corps. Things get worse when the living planet Mogo joins the fray on the side of evil.
John and Kyle go inside Mogo to try and snap it out of Krona’s mind control. Unfortunately they cannot so John makes the hard decision and uses the Indigo power ring to tap into the Black Lantern energy residing inside of Mogo from Blackest Night (long story) to shoot its heart. Mogo then explodes.
The effects of this even still resonate after the reboot and is another “low” point for John. But it was necessary and something only John can do.
3.) Kyle’s new Power?
The premise to GL: New Guardians is that a ring from each corps reaches out to Kyle. Representatives from each corps go to find out why which eventually leads to them teaming up. However, at the end of issue #2 Kyle goes to the Guardians to figure out what is going on with the rings when they attack him. All the rings fall on his fingers at the same time which leads to him gaining a new power.
What this power is or why Kyle is the only one who has been able to achieve it has not been revealed as of yet but that doesn’t take away from this eye-opening moment.
2.) Hal is Decommissioned
After Krona’s death at the end of War of the Green Lanterns, the Guardians immediately judge Hal for collaborating with the other corps during Brightest Day. Despite all the good he has done, the little blue people fear Hal and therefore decommission him and send him back to Earth.
This of course leads to the new 52 where Hal’s life spirals downward. He loses his job, Carol and a sense of purpose. That is until…
1.) Sinestro becomes a Green Lantern
Was there any doubt what the number one moment of 2011 was going to be? Sinestro became a Green Lantern during War of the Green Lanterns and teamed up with Hal to vanquish Krona. However, the ring remains as the Guardians cannot seem to remove it. They decide to keep Sinestro as a GL to his chagrin.
This has led to the new #1 of Green Lantern where Sinestro stars and the title has new life. Where the series will go and whether Sinestro will remain a GL permanently is yet to be seen. But should make for great stories in 2012.
