The newest version of the USCHO men’s Division I poll made waves today by keeping the same top five teams completely intact from the December 5th version of the poll. That means Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota remain the top two (despite Minnesota splitting games with Michigan Tech found here and here) followed by Boston College, Ohio State, and Merrimack. Boston College was beaten by UMass-Lowell, while Ohio State swept Miami-Ohio and Merrimack tied Colgate.
Notre Dame and Colorado College effectively traded spots this week with the Fighting Irish and Tigers coming in at #6 and #7 respectively after split weekends for both teams. Western Michigan stayed put at #8 followed by Boston University’s move to #9 from #11 off wins on Thursday night and Saturday night. Ferris State came in at #10, moving down one spot because of the aforementioned split with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Union, Colgate, and Cornell represented the east coast in the third group, coming in at #11, #12, and #13 respectively this week. Union beat RPI 5-2 on Saturday, Colgate tied Merrimack, and Cornell has been off for Christmas break since December 3rd. The Big Red will return to action on December 29 in the Florida College Classic. Denver and Michigan State represent the WCHA and CCHA coming in at #14 and #15 this week after the Pioneers split games with Bemidji State and the Spartans lost and tied with Michigan in their games in Ann Arbor.
Lake Superior comes in at #16 this week out of the CCHA after the Lakers split games with Northern Michigan. UMass-Lowell comes in at #17 after beating #3 Boston College 3-2 on Friday and losing to Northeastern on Saturday by the same score. North Dakota reigns as the #18 team in the country off a 2-1 loss and 1-0 win in hotly contested games with Nebraska-Omaha even when the Sioux took thirty-five and thirty-two shots respectively in those games with the Mavericks. Yale comes in at #19 and Michigan rises from the depths of unranked teams to come in at #20.
That’s it for this week’s edition of the poll, and I’ll see you next time.
