The 160 year old Valley Green Inn could not be more romantic and will make you comfortable with its decor and fare.
Set on the banks of the Wissahickon Creek within Philadelphia’s vast Fairmount Park next to historic Chestnut Hill in a 160 year old stucco stone building, the ambiance oozes charm. Whether it’s a chilly winter evening sitting next to the fireplace or a warm sunny day on the terrace, Valley Green can’t help but make anyone feel romantic.
Valley Green’s menus are classic American restaurant fare with few surprises. Yet the portions are generous and everything is expertly cooked and presented. Open seven days a week the lunch menu is particularly attractive. Appetizers such as French Onion Soup, Lobster Spring Roll and Calamari are in the $5.50 – $11.00 with salads and sandwiches ranging from $5.50 for a house salad or $9.50 for Smoked Salmon to Sirloin Burger for $7.00, Crab Cake sandwich or New York Strip Steak Sandwich for $13 – $14 respectively. You can even get good old Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf with Garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus, mushroom demi-glace for $10.00.
Dinners are a bit more but with many of the lunch time appetizers and salads remaining. One interesting appetizer addition is Southern Pulled Pork Dumplings with Pickled Watermelon Rind and Chipotle Barbeque sauce $9.00. The rest of the menu is standards from Grilled Pork Chops, Diver Sea Scallops and Filet Mignon with Prosciutto Wrapped Bone Marrow ranging from $24 – $32.00. A personal favorite is the Duck Two Ways: Sautéed Breast, Comfit Leg, with Goat Cheese-Potato Croquette, Baby Bok Choy, sun-Dried Cherry Duck Jus for $27.00.
Sunday Brunch is quite popular especially during the summer months when bikers, runners and walkers take advantage of outdoor seating. The Valley Green Inn has a two tiered brunch menu. One for $18.95 has entrees such as Huevos Rancheros, Omelets, Brie Stuffed French Toast or an interesting Wild Mushroom and Green Bean Frittata. The $22.95 selections include Filet Mignon Benedict, Shrimp & Scallop Hash and a Vegetarian Galantine of Portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, red onion, zucchini, yellow squash, basil oil cous cous. All brunches include pastries, soups or salads and beverage.
The Inn’s especially known for its events such as the Thanksgiving Dinner buffet. For $36.95 it is a corn a’copia of food. Reservations for Thanksgiving should be made by the end of September.
