What do you get when you mix superstars, supermodels, lingerie, and glitter? If you answered, a night in Charlie Sheen’s hotel room…close, but you’re wrong! Last night in New York City, Victoria’s Secret held their annual fashion extravaganza. Performances by Kanye West, Jay-Z, Maroon 5, and Nicki Minaj were some of the show highlights. The show reportedly cost 12 million dollars to produce and was held in an Armory in Manhattan’s Kips Bay neighborhood.
Preceding the show was a reported diet controversy sparked by statements made by Victoria’s Secret Angels, Adriana Lima and Chanel Iman. Lima, according to Forbes, is the 4th highest paid supermodel, bringing home 8 million dollars a year. The Brazilian beauty stated that she eats no “solid food” 9 days prior to the show and drinks nothing 12 hours prior to the show. On opposite spectrum, Chanel told reporters that she hosted a BBQ prior to the show in order to gain 15 lbs to help her look more curvy. Both models came under fire for extreme dieting, which should be expected in such a high profile job.
Another model recently criticized for her weight loss, VS Angel, Candice Swanepoel, opened the show. Swanepoel is also listed on the Forbes highest paid model list at #10. VS fave and new mommy, Miranda Kerr donned the 2.5 million dollar Fantasy Bra, last year’s version was worn by Lima. Another VS fave and #5 on the highest paid list, Alessandra Ambrosio wore wings that took seven years to make. The wings were made of gold, copper, and over 105,000 Swarvoski crystals…weighing about 30 lbs.
Kanye West wearing Versace for H&M, performed during the “Super Angels” themed part of the show, showcasing models dressed as superheros. The rapper was scheduled to perform during the show in 2007, but bowed out due to the death of his mother. West performed the song “Stronger,” which he was suppose to perform during that show and dedicated it to his mother. “I lost my super hero. And now she’s my super angel,” West said before his performance. Jay-Z surprised the audience when he jumped on stage with West to perform “N***** In Paris,” which was changed to “Homies In Paris” because the show will air on CBS on November 29th.
Nicki Minaj, performed “Super Bass”, in her usual colorful getup, while Maroon 5 played “Moves Like Jagger.” Lead singer Adam Levine accompanied his girlfriend, model Anne Vyalitsyna down the catwalk. Also walking the runway last night was Erin Heatherton, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Aldridge, and new-comer to VS, Karlie Kloss.
