Many dogs are notorious for ear problems and infections and keeping them in a clean state is important for good hygiene. Much has been written on the care of ear problems in dogs, including some of my own repertoire. There are many solutions and remedies as dogs can be prone to ear infections, some breeds more than others. Moisture gets trapped within the ear, which allows bacteria and yeast to thrive. Dogs with floppy ears are affected because of a lack air circulation. Ear infections cause great discomfort and pain for your dog. Frequently monitoring your dog’s ears and cleaning properly can ward off an ear infection before it becomes serious. An ear infection can be caused either from yeast or bacteria, requiring different treatments and medications. Per the advice of your local veterinarian in Rockford or one near to your home, there are several medications for dogs with ear problems. Using a home remedy of white vinegar, alcohol and water is a great preventative solution that is safe for your pet.
In order to get and keep your dog’s ears in a good healthy condition, you will need to have such items on hand such as cotton balls and swabs, special pet ear cleaner (available at most larger pet supply shops), white vinegar, isopropyl alcohol and your veterinarian’s phone number.
The first thing you will want to do is clean out your dog’s ears. Begin by checking your dog’s ears, especially if there is a foul odor present. This is a clear sign of an ear problem.
Wipe out the inside of the ear with a cotton ball. You can use a cotton swab, but do not go deep into the ear canal. Doing so can cause damage to the eardrum.
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol in a small applicator bottle. Vinegar is acidic and destroys bacteria and yeast, while the alcohol works to remove excess moisture due to its drying components.
Massage at the base of the ear and use the cotton balls or soft cloth to remove the excess solution from the ears. Repeat the process with plain water and cotton balls.
Clean your dog’s ears with the white vinegar home remedy solution twice weekly if a minor infection is present. Clean your dog’s ears at least once weekly as a maintenance regimen.
The vinegar and alcohol solution works well as a preventative to ear infections and maintenance. If this procedure is not helping your dog, the infection is probably at the stage where medical attention is needed. Call your veterinarian for further assistance in getting the ear infection diagnosed and treated with proper medication. The length of time for medication therapy can vary from a week to a month, depending upon the extent of your dog’s ear infection.
