On April 16, 2011, faculty, staff and students registered for the 32k run in remembrance of the 2007 shootings. Ironically this year, rain and high winds cancelled the race. An indoor picnic in the Squires Student Center was held for the 5000 who gathered that day.
In August 2011, a man appeared on campus with a gun, then disappeared before the start of the school year. On September 14, 2011, the hearing, that would have repealed a $500,000 fine that held Virginia Tech accountable for the delay in notifying student of an expected danger, was postponed.
On December 8th, a “Reading Day” or a day of no classes, a man shot and killed a police officer who had apparently stopped him, then he shot himself. Office Derriek Krause was a beloved husband and father of five. The shooter, named Ross Truett Ashley, was a part-time Radford student who was expected to graduate with a degree in management. He had robbed Gillant Real Estate office and ran off with a car a day earlier.
It has been a plague that has haunted the unversity since 2007. However,, a strong support system has emerged. Staff and students have held vigils for those who have loss their lives. There is also a 32k race held annually.
As far as the emergency alert system, Virginia Tech has implemented the alerts; most colleges in the state have followed suite. This last shooting, students interviewed stated that not only did they receive the alerts, but those in the cafeteria were held inside by officers until the police could unleash what had occurred..
Ross Ashley’s suicide has died has prompted the issue of why a student who had a chance for a great life ahead of him would have committed such a crime. No one will no for sure, except that it had to do with his future plans and that perhaps he may have been either disappointed or feared what lay ahead of him.. Occupy Wall Streeters have questioned the economy and their futures by protesting. Currently, Occupy Richmonders will protest outside of the capital and obey rules set in place for doing so.
On March 12, 2012, the hearing to appeal the fine is due to resume.
