The Golden State Warriors was awarded second-year guard Ishmael Smith on waivers from the Memphis Grizzlies.
The 6’0″ Smith is one of the quicker point guards in the NBA. Smith, along with rookie Charles Jenkins, will compete for minutes backing up Stephen Curry.
As an undrafted rookie free agent, Smith signed with the Houston Rockets. Smith split time between the Rockets and Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Houston’s NBA D-League affiliate.
In eight games with the Vipers, Smith averaged 12.5 points, 7.9 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks.
At last season’s trading deadline, Smith was traded to the Grizzlies along with Shane Battier.
In a 43-game rookie campaign, Smith averaged 2.3 points and 1.8 assists.
