Tomorrow night the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, “Pretty Much Dead Already” will air on AMC. And let’s make one thing very clear: We are expecting some major zombie mayhem.

What a helluva title. We’re not pulling any punches with this one, people. This is probably the most accurate episode title we’ve gotten yet, because let’s face it: Everyone on this show is living on borrowed time. To paraphrase the great Gandalf: All they have left to decide is what to do with the time that is given them. Well that’s… bleak.
On to the sneak peek. For the last several episodes, we’ve been watching a grudging power play between Man of Faith Hershel Greene and Man of Shoot-First-Ask-Questions-Later Rick Grimes (and if you’re still not on board with the theory that TWD is for Lost fans in withdrawl, I don’t think we’ve been watching the same show). In this sneak peek, it seems things come to a head between the two group leaders.
Rick is pretty adamant about staying within the safe confines of the farm. Hershel is pretty adamant about Rick and his people getting the heck out of dodge. Rick tries everything to plead his case. He says Hershel doesn’t know what it’s like out there (he doesn’t), he even tells him that he doesn’t give a damn about the zombies in the barn (not true, but he’s desperate). As a last flailing attempt, Rick tells Hershel Lori’s pregnant, something that could be a “blessing” on the farm, and a “death sentence” out there.
Well… he’s not wrong. But Hershel ain’t budging. Which begs the question: Why is Hershel so dead set against Rick’s group staying? Now that the secret of the dead people in the barn is in the open, there’s nothing left to hide. Rick has even offered to let the barn be. Is it just that Rick wounded Hershel’s pride? That Hershel’s stubborn and can’t share leadership with anyone? Is Hershel merely offended by his uninvited guests?
