With absolutely no new wide releases in theaters this weekend, it’s no surprise that “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” stayed in the top spot in what was an exceedingly slow box office weekend. The vampire romance grossed $16.9 million, a large drop-off from last weekend but just enough to keep it at number one.
“The Muppets” also remained a steady second with $11.2 million, while Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” jumped from number five to number three. Positive word of mouth likely kept it from dropping farther, although it still only grossed $7.6 million. It was closely followed by the animated holiday comedy “Arthur Christmas”, which made $7.3 million, while another animated comedy, “Happy Feet Two”, dropped from third to fifth.
The most successful of the weekend’s new limited releases was “Shame”, the controversial film starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. It opened in only ten theaters nationwide, yet grossed $361,000, enough to take it to sixteenth place at the box office.
