Maybe I see things quiet differently from most people, when it comes to the current job crisis our nation is facing right now. First of all, I am trying to figure out why people are looking to Washington to create jobs? Does this mean we all want to be federal employees? Because these are the jobs that come out of DC or that are funded by with tax payer dollars, right?
Maybe I see things differently, shouldn’t we all take a closer look at businesses, corporations, companies in our own city of Atlanta, that are just sitting on millions of dollars in annual profits and revenues, along with tax incentives for shipping American jobs overseas for cheaper labor to create even higher revenues and profits, while giving CEO’s enormous bonuses. This includes the state of Georgia government that shipped state jobs overseas.
In our own state let’s just look at the facts. We rank 50th in the nation for new job creation in the last three years. What does this really mean to the thousands of unemployed Georgians? The job you are currently looking for does not exist? It was probably shipped overseas for cheaper labor, or it no longer exists at all because of new technology. Before this recession began 84 % of all American workers hated their jobs according to the US Department of Labor. So do you really miss that old job?
With the salary of the average Georgia worker going down from $36,000 to approximately $27,000 and 1.2 million fewer new jobs in the market place than in 2011 as compared to 2007 when the recession began. What are you going to do to become gainfully employed in 2012? It was recently reported that only 18% of the state’s businesses plan on hiring in the first quarter of 2012. 12% of businesses indicate the will being laying off personnel. This is a meager net difference of only 6%. While 71% have said there will be no change in the hiring patterns for 2012. The overwhelming majority of business will not make any measurable changes in 2012.
Now as sad as that sounds there are plenty of reasons to be happy about your career prospects in metro Atlanta in 2012. With the disappearance of your last position, you are now left with this wonderful opportunity to use this precious down time to discover your true, innate abilities and design (yes, you will design) the perfect career opportunity for you to utilize these talents gifts and abilities for 2012. Stop wasting them on others and start using them to benefit your professional career.
Begin by asking yourself the following questions: (use a blank sheet of paper to make a list of detailed answers for each question) Honesty is a must here!!!
- What am I really good at? (List everything you can think of.)
- What is it I enjoy doing? ( Does not have to be work related)
- What do I want to do until I retire? ( Be honest with yourself)
- What do I want to do, even if I didn’t get paid to do it? ( Follow your passion not your pension)
These are critically important questions because the income potential for individuals earning over a million dollars rose 18% over the last three years. This clearly comes from people finding their passion when it comes to making a living. Have you found your passion? Or, are you just going through the motions, hoping something different will happen to you this year?
