It’s easy to figure out. Whether it be at Apple, Best Buy, Walmart, Sears, and other big department stores throughout Texas, the expensive high end electronics are going first and fast. According to MSNBC, these statistics can be seen on a nation wide level. This was just reported this morning as the results of Black Friday are coming in.
Several customers were waiting outside of Apple. Surprised? Wanting the newest model iPhone, laptop, computer, iPad or whatever these people have been waiting for designed by Apple, is not unusual any time of the year. This weekend, seeing customers waiting outside of the store in Austin, was unusual. “Apple is one of the best out there. Everyone who is an Apple fanatic will be here. The extra percent off, whether it was 10 or 20 percent, makes a difference. I waited outside for about thirty minutes. Certainly not hours and hours. Apple has a different client base,” explains Lysa Glass, a student at UT-Austin. Her friends all agree. The consensus is “Mac is the only thing we want this year. A lot of us want the iPad and the new iPhone. Some of us are even buying these high priced items as gifts. We don’t want to be selfish.”
Going over to a Walmart this Friday, as a spectator only, was a difficult chore. The lines were outrageous. It is hard to imagine that right after celebrating Thanksgiving, people drove to all Walmarts here in Austin. “It fits our budget and this time of year is about giving to those you love. It’s more than worth it to get that flat screen TV that is hundreds of dollars less than it normally is,” says Wanda Rickman. She is only one of the hundreds but she is speaking for everyone at Walmart this weekend.
Besides the higher end electronics, here in Austin, the results for apparel, toys, computer or X-box games, men’s gifts, perfumes, accessories, etc. are not in yet. By the looks of where customers were heading on this day, it appeared that Small Business Saturday was a success. Anywhere from boutiques throughout the city, to buying gift certificates at salons and spas locally, to wonderful magical stores, the crowds were certainly there to support their community. A sales associate at Hidden Treasures in Austin, said”we are giving out little gift boxes with a rock inside. We are known for rocks, salt lamps, stones, accessories and unreal finds. Inside that box is also a red note. Depending on what your note says, you can get up to 50 percent off your purchases. ” She laughs. “We are running out of boxes.” That was a wonderful thing to hear. Supporting your community is a wonderful way to add to the holiday cheer. More results to follow tomorrow. Oh no. It will be Cyber Monday. Hopefully the computer will be working so the results can be reported. Keep on smiling and enjoying your family and friends as you spend money and time on them. Always include a little something for yourself.
