Do you have that one family member or friend who is not a big fan of cats, yet every time they come over your cat goes straight to them; showering them with head rubs and purrs? It is like the cat knows they don’t like them so they must work to change their mind.
This behavior actually occurs due to the non-cat lovers body language. Most people who do not like cats will avoid them. If they encounter them in them same room as them, they will tend to avoid them by looking away from the cat whenever it comes around.
When cats are being aggressive, they pretty much have a staring contest. The one who is less dominant will eventually look down or away showing it is submissive and wants to be friends.
Therefore, your house guest is actually inviting the cat to come share in the love when they use this type of avoidance maneuver.
If the attention truly bothers your guest, the polite thing to do is to simply put Fluffy up in another room for a while. However, if this is a guest that is staying several days, they need to understand that your cat should not be punished for their visit. Try to find some middle ground for your guest and the cat.
For more information on cat behavior, visit the pet section at Barnes and Nobel (on the corner of Glenstone and Battlefield). They have numerous books that will help you translate your cats body language and habits.
