Will there be mail delivery on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2011?

Will there be mail delivery on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2011?

San Francisco residents are gearing up for New Year’s Eve. Many are planning on heading out to the fireworks show along the Embarcadero. Police have already posted no parking signs and have set up barricdes along the waterfront.

You may be wondering whether you can get those last minute errands done at the Post Office on New Year’s Eve or you might be wondering if you can expect mail delivery on New Year’s Eve. It’s a little confusing this year because New Year’s Day is on a Sunday.

Will there be mail delivery on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2011?

The answer is yes. There will be mail delivery on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2011. The Postal Holiday will be celebrated on Monday, January 2, 2012, so you won’t get mail on that day.

For a tour down the Postal Service’s memory lane, click on the video on the bottom left, for it’s famous “We deliver for you” commercial.

Are Post Offices open on New Year’s Eve?

Most will be open, but some will have shortened hours. Here’s the official word from the US Postal Service: “Revised hours are posted at each Post Office.

“Customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit usps.com for information about specific Post Offices.

“All Post Offices will be closed Sunday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Dec. 26, and Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2. Express Mail only will be delivered on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in most major metropolitan areas. All Post Offices will be open regular hours on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012, and regular mail delivery will resume.”

You may have heard something on the news about the Postal Service slowing down delivery. Don’t worry. That is not in effect yet. If you send a card or letter on New Year’s Eve, it will get delivered on the next delivery day, which will be on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

2012 holiday mail delivery

Next year, 2012, is a leap year, so Christmas Eve will be on Monday, December 24. There will be mail delivery on that Christmas Eve as well. Tuesday, December 25, 2012, Christmas Day, is the federal holiday, so of course, there will be no mail delivery that day. The same holds true for the following week in 2012. There will be mail delivered on New Year’s Eve 2012 but no mail, of course, on New Year’s Day 2012.

So while some of us might not be happy about not getting mail on the day after Christmas and the day after New Year’s Day in 2012, we have to appreciate the fact that we got mail on Christmas Eve and will get mail on New Year’s Eve.

By the way, the day after New Year’s, Monday, January 2, 2012, in addition to being a US Postal Holiday, it is also a federal, state, and local holiday. Government offices, banks and most businesses will be closed. But most stores will be open. And again, there will be no mail delivery on the day after New Year’s Day, Monday, January 2, 2012, but there will be mail delivery on New Year’s Eve, Saturday, December 31, 2011.
