It’s a cold Christmas Eve in San Francisco. Before you veture out in your woolies to check the mail, you may be wondering if there is mail service today, Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, 2011. It’s a question a lot of people are asking because Christmas falls on a Sunday this year.
Will there be mail delivery on Christmas Eve, 2011?
The answer is yes. The postal holday will be celebrated on Monday, December 26. Christmas Eve 2011 will be a day of work for the US Postal Service.
Will Post Offices be open on Christmas Eve?
Here’s the official word from the US Postal Service:
“Most San Francisco Postal District Post Offices will be open Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24 and New year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2011, but some will either be closed or shorten retail lobby hours. Mail delivery on Dec. 24 and (New Year’s Eve) Dec. 31 is unaffected by the change.
“Revised hours are posted at each Post Office and commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for Dec. 24 hours of operation.
“Customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit usps.com <usps.com> for information about specific Post Offices. In addition, mail should be deposited into blue collection mailboxes by noon for early pick-up on December 24.
“All Post Offices will be closed Sunday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Dec. 26, and Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2. Express Mail only will be delivered on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in most major metropolitan areas. All Post Offices will be open regular hours on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012, and regular mail delivery will resume.”
You may have heard something on the news about the Postal Service slowing down delivery. Don’t worry. That is not in effect yet. If you send a card here in the Bay Area to some place else in the Bay Area, it will get there overnight.
So don’t worry about sending those last minute Christmas cards. There will be mail delivery on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2011. There will also be delivery on New Years Eve.
So be sure to give your letter carriers a smile for working on Christmas Eve. Mail delivery is something we all take for granted, but those letters don’t get delivered by Santa’s elves. The Postal Service’s letter carriers are all working on Christmas Eve to make sure your mail gets delivered in time for Christmas.

By the way, 2012 is a leap year, so Christmas Eve will be on Monday, December 24. There will be mail delivery on that Christmas Eve as well. Tuesday, December 25, Christmas Day, is the federal holiday, so of course, there will be no mail delivery that day.
