Will there be mail delivery today, the day after Christmas, Monday, December 26, 2011?
It’s the day after Christmas, Monday, December 26, 2011.
You may be wondering about whether you will get any late Christmas cards or packages in the mail today. Since Christmas fell on a Sunday this year, a day in which there is not mail delivery anyway, some are wondering whether there will be mail service today, the day after Christmas, Monday, December 26, 2011.
The answer, unfortunately, is no. You will have to wait until tomorrow, Tuesday, December 27, to get those late Christmas cards and packages. Fortunately, we did have mail delivery on Christmas Eve, so many people got their last minute Christmas gifts and cards then.
The postal holday will be celebrated on Monday, December 26. (Christmas Eve 2011 was a day of work for the US Postal Service. )
I undestand mail won’t be delivered but will Post Offices be open on the day after Christmas, Monday, December 26, 2011?
Here’s the official word from the US Postal Service: “Most San Francisco Postal District Post Offices will be open Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24 and New year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2011, but some will either be closed or shorten retail lobby hours. Mail delivery on Dec. 24 and (New Year’s Eve) Dec. 31 is unaffected by the change.
“Revised hours are posted at each Post Office and commercial customers are asked to check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for Dec. 24 hours of operation.
“Customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit usps.com for information about specific Post Offices. In addition, mail should be deposited into blue collection mailboxes by noon for early pick-up on December 24.
“All Post Offices will be closed Sunday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Dec. 26, and Sunday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 2. Express Mail only will be delivered on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in most major metropolitan areas. All Post Offices will be open regular hours on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 and Jan. 3, 2012, and regular mail delivery will resume.”
You may have heard something on the news about the Postal Service slowing down delivery. Don’t worry. That is not in effect yet. If you send a card here in the Bay Area to some place else in the Bay Area, it will get there overnight.
2012 holiday mail delivery
Next year, 2012, is a leap year, so Christmas Eve will be on Monday, December 24. There will be mail delivery on that Christmas Eve as well. Tuesday, December 25, 2012, Christmas Day, is the federal holiday, so of course, there will be no mail delivery that day. The same holds true for the following week in 2012. There will be mail delivered on New Year’s Eve 2012 but no mail, of course, on New Year’s Day 2012.
So while some of us might not be happy about not getting mail on the day after Chritmas this year, sometimes called Boxing Day in Canada and other parts of the world, we have to appreciate the fact that we got mail on Christmas Eve and will get mail on New Year’s Eve.
By the way, the day after Christmas, Monday, December 26, 2011, in addition to being a US Postal Holiday, it is also a federal, state, and local holiday. Government offices, banks and most businesses will be closed. But most stores will be open. And again, there will be no mail delivery on the day after Christmas this year.
