Continuing on from our last article featuring Wayne Gretzky Estates white wines, now we can tell you about the red wines we tried too, perfect for autumnal evenings indoors in Calgary. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these wines is donated to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation each year, to provide less fortunate youth with the opportunity to experience the sport of hockey.
Wayne Gretzky Estates 2007 Merlot $19.49 12.7% ABV
An easy drinking wine with a surprisingly fruity aromas of cassis and cherries, the 2008 Merlot presents a soft and rounded mouthfeel, with gentle velvety tannins and rich, ripe flavours of black berries, blueberries and black olives, with a long spicy oak finish. Would be perfect with Puttanesca and other full-flavoured tomato pasta dishes, braised beef and lamb or casseroles, bison short rib and chilli con carne.
Ready to be opened and enjoyed right now, but will happily rest in its bottle for 2-3 more years.
Gretzky Estates 2007 Merlot was awarded a Bronze Medal at the InterVin International Wine Awards this year.
Wayne Gretzky Estates 2007 Estate Series Cabernet Merlot $23.99 12.7% ABV
Drinking beautifully now, this rich and luscious Meritage is made from grapes across the Niagara region, from the shores of Lake Ontario at Niagara-on-the-Lake to Winona at the extreme western end of Niagara viticulture. The different batches and grape varieties were fermented separately and only combined after extensive tasting and blending trials, producing a deep and full-flavoured wine with earthy forest floor notes, and hints of mushrooms, truffles and mocha. Rounded and well-integrated tannins provide a firm backbone for this great value wine, that would be a perfect partner to pot roasts, rich beef stews with reduced wine or port sauces, and other robustly-flavoured dishes.
A highly award-winning wine, the 2007 Estate Series Cabernet Merlot has won Gold Medals at the Cuvée Wine Awards, the Ontario Wine Awards, the Canadian Wine Awards in 2010 and a Silver Medal at the Intervin International Wine Awards in 2009.
Wayne Gretzky Estates 2006 Shiraz Icewine, $38.49 200ml, 10.5% ABV
This complex and intensely flavoured wine is a rarity, as while the Niagara peninsula makes more icewine than anywhere else on earth, it takes a lot of heat to ripen the Syrah grape and lengthy freezing temperatures to make icewine.
There are aromas of syrupy strawberries and honeyed apricots with a lovely, rich plum, cinnamon and pomegranate flavour in the mouth.
While this icewine requires no food at all, it would be a delightful end to a meal with a chocolate fondue, cherry bakewell tart, or your favourite fruit pie (particularly cherry and/or strawberry pie).
Gretzky Estates 2006 Shiraz Icewine won a Bronze Medal at the 2009 Canadian Wine Awards
