Wayne Gretzky’s Estate Winery is not only close to his heart, but close to his home town in Vineland Ontario, in Niagara wine country. Since 2007 it been a destination for both wine and hockey fans; visitors can view Gretzky memorabilia and taste the full portfolio of Gretzky’s 100% VQA wines – and do good at the same time.
The Wayne Gretzky Foundation believes that hockey contributes to the physical, emotional and social growth of young people, and so a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the wines is donated to the Foundation each year, providing less fortunate youth with the opportunity to experience the sport of hockey. To date, the Wayne Gretzky Foundation has raised over $1 million dollars to help children in communities across Canada.
Here are two white wines, both drinking beautifully now and great for our extended Calgary autumn that we’re all enjoying this year!
Wayne Gretzky Estates 2008 Riesling $18.99 11.3% ABV
The 2008 Riesling is a good example of one of Niagara’s most prized grapes. There are aromas of elderflower and lime on the nose following through to the palate, combined with a bright acidity and a lengthy finish. Just a hint of sweetness and a creamy mouthfeel see that this fresh and crisp wine will pair beautifully with spicy Thai, Vietnamese and Korean food, goat and Feta cheeses and any seafood dish, particularly sashimi. This estate Riesling is drinking very well now and will continue to evolve in the bottle over the next few years – if you can keep it that long! A great value.
Gretzky Estates 2008 Riesling was awarded a Bronze Medal at the Intervin International Wine Awards 2009
Wayne Gretzky Estates 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay $18.49 12.7% ABV
A captivating wine, the 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay presents a scent of fresh white peach mingled with a little pear and white blossom. It is a delicate wine, with good minerality and balance between fruit and acidity to give a soft, yet fresh and mouth-watering appeal.
This unoaked Chardonnay would be a great match for creamy dishes such as Alfredo or Carbonara, mayonnaise-based dishes such as potato salad and Coronation Chicken, and dishes with dill or tarragon.
Gretzky Estates 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay was awarded a Silver Medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships and a Bronze Medal at the InterVin International Wine Awards last year.
