Starting for 2011 I will highlight a Wrestler of Week. This is just a little way to highlight an individual (or tag team as the case may be) that had a particularly banner week in terms of storyline or on-air achievement. In addition to highlighting a Wrestler of Week, two honorable mentions will also be noted. Throughout the year point totals will be tallied. Each week 5 points will go to the actual Wrestler of the Week, 3 points going to the first Honorable Mention and 1 going to the second Honorable Mention. At the end of the year a Wrestler of the Year will be crowned.
Wrestler of the Week
“The Voice of the Voiceless” had a huge week last week on Monday Night RAW. After his continual meddling with RAW GM John Laurinaitis and David Otunga, he successfully defended his newly won WWE Championship against the former Champion Alberto Del Rio in one helluva main event match. Here’s hoping this is actually the start of a substained push for Punk on top of the card, complete with lengthy reign as WWE Champion.
Punk’s SmackDown contemporary Daniel Bryan also had a banner week in WWE. On RAW he gave a great interview to Michael Cole hyping up his World Title match against Mark Henry on the live SmackDown. Bryan’s critics always claim he can’t cut a decent promo, but Monday night should prove some naysayers wrong. Then on Tuesday night on the live SmackDown he went toe-to-toe with Henry in an awesome main event steel cage match. While Bryan lost the match to Henry he looked like a superstar even in a loss. And he’s still got his Money in the Bank contract he can cash in the future.
Over in Ring of Honor this past weekend, the Television Champion had a perfect 3-0 weekend. On Saturday night in Spartanburg, South Carolina he defeated TJ Perkins. Then later in the same night, he won the Honor Rumble which guarantees him a ROH World Championship opportunity sometime in 2012. Then the next night in Greensboro, North Carolina he defeated Adam Cole in a Proving Ground match.
And because this was such a big week I want to briefly mention other wrestlers who had quite the week as well, even though no points will be awarded to them.
Mark Henry – defeated Daniel Bryan in a great Steel Cage World Title match on Tuesday night’s live SmackDown special…
Dolph Ziggler – pinned company “golden boy” Randy Orton clean as a whistle on Monday Night RAW…
Sara Del Ray – went 3-0 during CHIKARA’s JoshiMania run of shows, defeating Ayako Hamada, Aja Kong and Tsubasa Kuragaki in three separate one-on-one matches…
Hiroshi Tanahashi – set the record for successful IWPG Heavyweight Title defenses, defeating Yuji Nagata, who was the prior record holder…
Bobby Roode – looked great on Impact Wrestling this past week. He had his legitimate family cut vignettes hyping up Roode’s recent evil behavior and then defeated AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy in a triple threat main event match.
